One more series finished, though I guess I should say two, as I also recently completed My-Hime. I don’t have much to say about My-Hime beyond asking the question, what the hell was that ending about? I don’t mind a happy ending, but it should at least be reasonable.
Hatenkou Yugi was, to put it quite simply, silly. The first episode was a mess that failed to properly introduce the characters, but they grow on you pretty quick. The show resembles (and yes, this is a stretch) Kyouran Kazoku Nikki, in that it uses lighthearted comedy as a front for a cast of characters with really dark backgrounds. Both series strike a sort of balance between laughing out loud and thinking “oh god, that’s horrible” as they switch from frenzied comedy to showing innocent people getting murdered. Then while you’re still in a state of mild shock, Rahzel reappears in one of her cute outfits to make you forget that the series is actually depressing. Since screencaps can’t do her fashion sense any real justice, I figured this image of her eating broccoli would have to do.

The last episode of this short 10 episode series set up a rather unnecessary second season, but I guess I wouldn’t mind seeing more of the characters. The supporting cast isn’t as fun as the main character, but at least they manage to always keep things interesting.
Was Hatenkou Yugi anything special? Not really, but it’s certainly not bad. I’d recommend it if you’ve got a few hours to spare.
I thought the series was okay, and the main leads had very different and interesting personalities compared to most anime shows. I thought that the episode centered around the circus was pretty good.
I re watched this show a second time simply to screenshot all of Razhel’s outfits. =)
I shall continue to go down in history as the only one who loved the My-HiME ending.
Hatenkou Yuugi is great, and makes a shitload more sense if you read the manga (10 volumes, and arranged very differently). If you’re going to compare it to something, though, at least use Jing…
>I shall continue to go down in history as the only one who loved the My-HiME ending.
What did you love about it? You crazy person.
And I really don’t see the comparison between Hatenkou Yugi and Jing.
Well, as someone said in a post, it depends on what you were looking at Mai-HiME as, which considering how many genres and ideas the show brings together can be quite a challenge. The only problem I had with it was that it seemed to wipe everything clean. They could do the ending how they did, as long as they shows that change occurred. Which they didn’t.
And as for Hatenkou Yugi I thought that the best thing about the show was the interplay between Rahzel, Baroqueheat and Alzeid. Granted, the show could have just been about Rahzel, and it wouldn’t have been great. But then we wouldn’t have seen fun moments like their card game in episode 6.
>What did you love about it? You crazy person.
When you are creating a story, you have the power to do whatever you want with it. You can make people die, or you can make them come to life, or whatever. The ending could have been depressing, or it could have been insanely happy – does it really make a difference? Would it have been better is Mai had killed the final boss and died there as well, or lived on for some indeterminable future? At that point, it really didn’t fucking matter what happened, the story was ending, everyone was dead, so instead of a predictable kill final boss and walk, they went for a total twist and deus ex machina’d everyone for a happy ending which zaps a warm feeling back into you and lets you know you didn’t care about these people for nothing. I think it pretty much saved an otherwise dull, unmemorable ending.
>The ending could have been depressing, or it could have been insanely happy – does it really make a difference?
Yes. If there had been any hint whatsoever that the headmaster had that level of power, I would have been ok with it, but it was too out of nowhere. It felt cheap.
hence ‘deus ex machina’. It’s my favorite cheap plot device, so yah lol.
